- <p> DIED. George Murphy, 89, Hollywood song-and-dance man turned
- U.S. Senator; in Palm Beach, Fla. Murphy made 55 movies,
- including This is the Army in 1943 with Ronald Reagan, his
- longtime friend. He also appeared with such stars as Gene Kelly
- and Shirley Temple. Murphy served two terms as president of the
- Screen Actors Guild and in 1950 received an honorary Academy
- Award for career achievement. A Republican, Murphy retired from
- the screen in 1952 and was elected to the Senate from California
- in 1964 in his first bid for political office. He lost a
- re-election bid in 1970 and became a political consultant.
